“I already know everything about history,” she said at the beginning of class. “I wish I could just test out of here.”

“Is that right?”

“Yeah. It’s a waste of my time.”

“Okay,” I responded and, while I don’t endorse public shaming, I still decided to go with the oldest trick in the book. “What year did the War of 1812 start?”

There was a brief pause, then: “Um… 1492?”

Gets them every time.

I particularly like how the battle most U.S. citizens remember from the War of 1812 (You know, the one with Baltimore, stars, spangles, banners, and apparently a lot of bursting things) happened in 1814.
